Troop 117 from Stony Brook, NY was
originally started in the 1930's, but later disbanded. It was reactivated under
Scoutmaster Jack Usher in 1944 and has now been in existence for 58 years. It
is part of the Benjamin Tallmadge District from Suffolk County Council, Long
Island. The Stony Brook Rotary Club has been the troop's sponsor since 1951.
Our first Eagle Scouts: Warren Williams, David Selleck, and Robert Usher
received their rank in 1949.
In 1969, our Silver Anniversary year the
first contingent of Troop 117 Scouts traveled to Philmont Scout Ranch in New
Mexico. In 1976 the troop adopted the red beret, as it’s official headgear to
commemorate the U.S. bicentennial. The troop began attending summer camp at
Yawgoog Scout Reservation in Rhode Island circa 1980. Later we moved summer
camp to the Baiting Hollow Scout Reservation in Suffolk County, New York and
now for the last several years we have attended Resica Falls Scout Reservation
in Pennsylvania.
To date four adult leaders of Troop 117 have
received the Silver Beaver award by Suffolk County Council: Jack Usher, Fred
Nolte, Vincent O’Leary, and Kevin O’Leary.
